In Emile Zola's short story “Germinal,” the author uses the metaphor of spring and growth to represent the increasing awareness of the people as well as imagery throughout the short story. Zola's use of perspective helps the reader understand the passage by seeing what emotions Ettienne is feeling among himself and his vision of everything. Zola focuses on making Ettienne the main character using detail and depth whereas the other characters, the reader knows little about.
