Justin Kurzel uses a range of different imagery in the 2015 film adaptation of Macbeth (written by Shakespeare) to convey key ideas and themes. The use of light and dark, animal imagery, weather imagery and blood imagery, convey a key idea or theme such as natural order, good & evil and guilt and consciences. Justin Kurzel adaptation uses animal imagery and weather imagery to communicate the theme of natural order. Macbeth’s act of killing king Duncan is thought to be unnatural for it is unnatural to be killed and the kings was thought to be chosen by god. This unnatural act disrupts the natural order. This disruption to the natural order is shown with animal imagery of a restless horse in it’s stables (37-38.00) when the king is being murdered. Light coloured clothes in the movie usually represent goodness or power, with those who are evil or commoners usually wearing black. King Duncan is always wearing white in the movie showing his power and kindness. King Duncan’s troops are usually wearing light colours or white to represent their power and goodness. On the other hand Macbeth is usually seen in black or dark clothes this highlights his evil within. Good and evil is also shown in the technique of lighting. The king is predominant in well light or warm coloured scenes such as the tent scene (8 minutes) where the tent is of a golden hue.
