The Self-Empowerment of Awakenings Revolution, puppets, and awakenings are used to convey the Imagine Dragon’s message in their music video “ Radioactive.” The Imagine Dragons is an alternative rock band, which formed in 2009 (Par. 4 ID). Their Grammy award winning song “Radioactive,” is filled with powerful vocals and dramatic music. The lyrics are about the apocalypse and revolution. However, the video is centered on the battle between an evil purple puppet and a passive pink puppet. The combinations of the lyrics and the music video create an unusual, but effective juxtaposition. In their music video “Radioactive,” the Imagine Dragons depict oppression, awakenings, and good vs. evil while leading the listener to feel empowered. The Imagine Dragons is made up of four members, singer Dan Reynolds, the guitar Wayne Sermon, Daniel Platzman as percussion, and Ben Mckee as bass. Reynolds is the writer of the song “Radioactive.” In 2014, “Radioactive,” won a Grammy for best rock performance. The audience for Imagine Dragons is made up of listeners of alt-rock and youth who identify with personal awakenings. The dusty instruments represent a tired, worn, and lonely state of mind. This is the way one might feel prior to an awakening. The dusty instrument could also allude to self-empowerment. When one is not self-empowered it feels like their life is just getting dusty. Then when one becomes self-empowered the dust just starts falling away as one takes control of their life and becomes empowered. Oppression is depicted through the gathering of dust.
