All humans, each and every person, have their own unique opinion. As immigrants migrate to America, they face many challenges: financial, social, and political. In Funny in Farsi, author Firoozeh Dumas tells a memoir about her coming to America from Iran, and enduring many trials while trying to acquire acceptance of the fellow Americans around her. Someone is no longer considered an immigrant when they are legally documented and contribute to the society. When immigrants are treated like an outcast, it does not give them a positive outlook on their success of achievement.
If all of the world's immigrants lived in one single country, it would be the world's fifth largest, with around 244 million people, 65.6 million people out of them have been forced to flee their homes. Overall, international migrants makeup 3.3% of the world's population today (Phillip Connor). Therefore, we must respect and be open-minded towards them as they are human beings just like us. The idea that immigrants and refugees cause unemployment, economic problems and negatively impact the society is the wrong mentality to have and needs to be changed because this is discriminatory and based on assumption and not facts.
Robots and machines were created to make our lives easier by taking repetitive jobs off our hands and saving time. For instance electric washing machines transformed clothes cleaning from an hours-long task into something accomplished with the push of a button. Recently machines have started to take a bigger role in our lives putting some out of work. Factory and manual labor provide uneducated and unskilled workers with entry level jobs to make a living. In the past, America was promoted as the land of opportunity which brought in new people from around the world, but studies are showing a steady decrease in Immigrants today.
“One of the greatest glories of the public school was its success in Americanizing immigrants” Christakis quoted Ravitch in paragraph 20 is what surprised me because I have never heard of this concept before. Personally, I believe that would depend on the student. For example, one of my friends is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Africa) and at first she was not really Americanized, like she did not use slang, she was not procrastinating. But, as time went on she made more American friends and became accustomed to America that was when she did start using slang and procrastinating. I agree with Christakis when she said “public schools also provide students with crucial exposure to people of different backgrounds and perspectives.”
How would you feel if you and your family were denied the opportunity to a better life or had to wait years for one? The immigrants goal is to strive for a better future for themselves and their family. Coming here will help them achieve that goal. You may be thinking why cant they have a good future where they live? In some cases, the country they live in could be poor, not have many schools, is not safe, etc.
It is getting harder for immigrants living in the United States to fulfill their American Dream, which causes them to put pressure on their first generation American child to fulfill the dream for them. To many immigrant parents, the Dream consist of getting a high paying stable job, and being able to provide for the rest of the family. However, even if a first generation child goes to a well respected college to get the stable, high paying job of their parents dreams, it is sometimes not enough. Due to language barriers and ethnic sounding names, first generation Americans are constantly being put down by employers who care more about appealing to the White public than provide an educated person a job. Numerous people suspect that Mexicans are criminals and ruthless people, but honestly bad people come in different colors, sizes, and cultures. Like all people around the world no matter if you’re big or small, we are identical by being people with the same mentality in becoming someone in life who you can be proud of. Two separate studies’ discussed in the sixth and seventh paragraphs dispel common beliefs that immigrants take jobs away from natural born citizens. The studies concluded that the exact opposite of popular opinion, immigrants in fact benefitted the economy for employers, employees, and the US economic position.

Immigrants motivations, experiences, and impacts shaped what an immigrant had to go through being a different person from another country. Although Americans dislike foreigners who came to the United States, immigrants had a role in political, economic, cultural, and social aspects of immigrants because of their motivations, experiences, and impacts in America. New Immigrants did not have it easy and went through obstacles natives, political figures, bosses and others had thrown at them.
