Abstract
A jet of water creates a force as it strikes on targets of different shapes according to the conservation of momentum principle. The purpose to carry out this experiment is to examine the validness of theoretical expressions for the force exerted by a jet on target of different shapes. In the experiment, the target plane will striked by the water that flows out from the nozzle at an angle of 120° and to the vertical. In the beginning, the balance indicator of the apparatus is fixed to the balance

In this experiment, the target plate used is inclined at an angle of 120 to the vertical. Thus, the direction of the linear momentum prior to the collision differs from the direction of the linear momentum after it.
F = where u = initial velocity of the particles v = final velocity of the particles m = mass of water = rate of flow of mass of water F = (-v cos - u)
The force supplied by the jet of water equals the weight of the load on the weight pan, so the system is in equilibrium.
Fy = -F = -(-v cos - u)
=-(v cos+ u)
Because there is no loss of kinetic energy (the collision is perfectly elastic), u = v and thus, Fy =(-v cos - u)............................(i) From =
we obtain m = V = = Q ................................................(ii)
where = density of water V = volume of water t = time Q = [flow rate of water through the nozzle]
The average velocity of the jet stream of water is given by
v =
