During the time of English contact, the Algonquian-speaking Powhatan Indians lived in a large portion of Virginia, and specifically the Appomattocks tribe of the Powhatans resided in Central Virginia (“Virginia”). There were over thirty tribes in the Powhatan Chiefdom, led by Chief Powhatan. They lived in a ten-thousand-square-mile area they called Tsenacommacah, and their population in 1607 is estimated to have been around fifteen thousand. Powhatan towns were located on high ground near rivers, which were utilized for food, transportation, and bathing (“The”).
The Jamestown colony came to establish English power in the New World and to explore the New World and also to plunder the Portuguese ships passing with slaves and other important cargo. The Plymouth colony, which consisted of all Puritans, came because King Charles I was persecuting the Puritans in England. In other words, the Puritans wanted religious freedom, so their only option was to come to the New World to avoid death. Rarely, in these histories, do we hear of what incredible women also helped to shape and influence the successes in the early United States. This is an incredibly important issue because women played just as a big of a role in the founding of the new world as men did. In May of 1607, around 108 Englishmen made their way to America and landed on the banks of the Chesapeake bay. They called this new place Jamestown, after the reigning English King, James the 1st.

In 2014, 320,090,857 people lived in the United States; back in 1607, a small group of 100 men from England inhabited the same land in the new world. Aspiring to be the first permanent English settlement in The New World, colonist filled three boats and set sail up the Chesapeake Bay and landed in Jamestown, Virginia. Colonists had three major troubles when settling in Jamestown: controversial relationships, lack of skill, and environmental problems.

Early Jamestown was a time for colonization, bonding, and friendship. The English settled in Jamestown, Virginia in the year 1607. The Jamestown settlement in the Colony of Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. Early Jamestown was called “Early” because this was way back in the day. Even though this was a time for colonization, Colonists faced numerous problems.
Although The Starving Time caused most of the settlers in Jamestown to perish, more settlers kept coming from overseas. Also under the leadership of John Smith Jamestown’s population grew gradually overtime. However, as the population grew People decided to continue expanding towards the west. Unfortunately, this was in direct opposition to Powhatan’s plan of restricting the Europeans from expanding and making allies with other Indian Tribes. If the English settlers were able to gain aid from other tribes, the dependence on Powhatan would be undermined.

Powhatan Indians men’s fished in rivers , trapped and hunted animals for food and clothing, and made weapons and tools for farming. The women's chores were making pottery and wooden plates, gardening, and gathering food like nuts and berries. They grew grapes, corn, pumpkins, squash, sunflowers and beans. After the women made the pottery, they put them out for the sun to dry them. They also made clothing for the village.
