In this article, the disputable discussion is about whether graphic novels should be classified as literature or whether it should be censored. Some reasons explaining why individuals feel the need to censor comics are because of the coarse language and explicit graphic pictures displayed the book. These graphics allows readers to visualize and interpret additional information than necessary. The reason why this article relates to my topic and is suitable for being incorporated within my essay is because it plays a major role in defining how the Marjane Satrapi’s novel Persepolis displays the theme of politics, the Islamic Revolution, and the war between Iran and Iraq. Due to the powerful topic and many harsh graphical pictures being exhibited in this graphic novel, many schools in the United States were instructed to remove this novel from their curriculum. The article further explains that one of the reasons behind revoking the censorship of graphic novels is because it teaches individuals to expand their imagination and think beyond their limits. Furthermore, several famous female graphic novelists, including Marjane Satrapi, discuss and analyze their new philosophies and experiences within these graphic novels.
