I believe that arts education drives forward the cognitive workings of the mind, developing innovation within culture and personal life long creativity. Arts education is intrinsic to the act of knowing by means of perception and understanding of self. We/I teach the arts because artists are not only the makers of objects but pioneers of ideas and concepts that have advanced humanity. The artist is also the scientist, the architect, the engineer and the doctor because the artist is a critical creative thinker.
I believe in arts education because it reaches beyond the studio/ gallery walls, visual knowledge transcends language “…visual perception lays the groundwork of concept formation” (Arnheim, 1972, P.294) together Knowledge (decoding) and perception (applying theory to concept) solidifies a way of knowing through experience. Arts education allows students to see imaginary concepts and emotions in a physical form. Our imagination as explained by Jean-Paul Sartre in The Imaginary, allows us to create our perceived world from the inside out through our intentions of thought. I decided to display the importance of arts education through the imagery of a blanket fort because of the structures imaginative and playful qualities.
