The purpose of this article is to highlight the importance of the Cultural Awareness. Be aware of your surroundings when visiting a foreign country or when sharing with people of different culture, to learn their costumes and their way of life will have a positive effects in your interaction in that specific place. Cultural Awareness constitutes a priority within the Army due the fact that the Army is an organization around the world made up of members of different cultures. Being aware of different cultures can affect positively or negatively the diplomatic relations among countries. This article will give you a basic knowledge of the culture of Colombia, their history, and their costumes.

Colombia was discovered and colonized by Spaniards in 1499. This event brought to the country different races like Spaniards and Africans. The culture shock of these races together evolving among the years is what we know as Colombians. The Colombian culture is a complex one, with a population of 42.3 million people, you can see the difference in their characteristics. For example, a person who lives up north in Cartagena would have different characteristic to a person living in the center of Medellin. Why? Because Cartagena has a strategic position and in the past was used for the counterfeit of slavery. They had a lot of black people in their city compared with others. But if you compare it with Bogota, you would see much more white people due the mix of Spaniards and natives, which is what they call “criollos.” Colombians could have different physical characteristics because their ethnic roots but they all share costumes that identify them as
