In order to become a professional dancer, one must know proper technique. Proper technique includes the use of the head, arms, hands, and the body itself. Each of these elements link together and initiate smooth movements from one limb of the body to another. The use of the head is one of the most important aspect of dance as it carries both eyes through the space. In relation to eyes, a dancer’s arms will usually follow, even if they are not the correct arms. Using the head allows a human being to glance at something in the space around them. This glance could be a reaction to something happening far away or close to the body. Being a dancer, the use of the head allows a reaction to the direction our body is moving. The dancer must be aware of the dynamics within the movement of the arms in relation to the rest of the body. Port de bras makes dancing much easier as it assists every movement we make, whether it’s at the barre or in the center. The use of the arms serves three main functions in dance. The first function is balancing the body evenly. Secondly, our arms make shapes and we use a circular shape as our arms move through each position of the body, except while executing an arabesque. The third function of the arms is to execute gestures with the hands. It is known for many dancers that focus on the arms too much, have broken wrists and do not realize it. The movement of the arms in relation the hands or body, should execute a complete and straight line from what distal end to the other. Adding other gestures, such as broken wrists, breaks the line of the dancer and does not provide a picture to be framed. Port de bra is an extension of the back and shoulders. The arms are connected to the shoulders, which are connected to the spine, leading up the head.
