In the film Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle, two brothers (Salim and Jamal Malik) have to stay together and learn to adapt quickly in order to survive. Salim takes on the role of being in charge for himself and Jamal since he is the older one. As the boys move on from their old life living in the slums with their mother who was brutally killed to living in an apartment building they grow farther away from each other as they focus on their own interests. In Slumdog Millionaire, the harmfulness of India 's progress out ways the benefits. Early in the film, English subtitles are used because the language spoken by everybody is Hindi. As Salim and Jamal grow up and continue to move around they start speaking English. This is important because learning English means that places all around the country are interacting with people from other countries and those interactions can lead to progress such as the high rise buildings and more transportation like personal cars. However, this progress also means that in order to improve your way of life you sometimes need to adapt and change yourself which may include the language you speak or your culture. This is seen in Salim and Jamal when they are at the temple and give tours to the tourists in English to some European tourists. The two brothers also steal people 's shoes and then later sell them in the streets. Unlike giving misguided tours and stealing goods to sell later on Jamal gets a legitimate job in a call center.
