Effective pain management is a vital component to quality patient care. Nurses play an essential role in implementing pain management. Empowered nurses equipped with the latest evidenced based knowledge, skills and information are able to provide safe and compassionate care during the most vulnerable time in the life of critical care patients. Evidenced- based pain management information is crucial to provide the nurse with unbiased skills that could form the basis of their knowledge and attitudes. An environment equipped with open communication and exchange of ideas, would definitely help facilitate the knowledge growth of nurses and empower them in their workplace to provide expert nursing care. Pain usually resolves during the appropriate healing period. However, untreated pain leads to serious consequences. There are many factors that prevent nurses from adhering to guidelines of proper pain management. Eventually, the ultimate outcome will have severe consequences on patients’ health. (As a result, untreated pain will lead to physiological imbalance of the endocrine system. Endocrine system Pain will lead to a hyperarousal of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal system. As a result adrenocorticotropin and cortisol serum levels will rise. If the severe pain \does not subside the system will no longer maintain balanced hormone production such hormones are crucial to pain control and any deficit in their levels will retard healing.
