One of 20th century’s greatest thinkers, Rabindranath Tagore once said, “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” One of the greatest lessons that I have learned in life is that true joy comes from serving. Three actions of gratitude in my life revolve around the NHS pillar of serving: my faith, my family and friends, and my own wellbeing, and I’ve learned these must be served in that order to create true joy. I believe that I am qualified to be a member of National Honor Society because of the willingness I have to serve others. Serving was how God led by example, and I believe that the pillar of leadership is an act of service in itself. Not everyone is called to lead, but I believe that God has given me the will and tools to be one, and it is a choice I will continue to make in the years to come. A few ways that I have lead by service so far was co-teaching a group of young girls with basketball, volleyball, and softball. I was able to show these young girls the basics and techniques of these sports as well as the importance of attitude on and off the court, knowing all the while that I am a leader in the community in whom they look up to. As I also grew up having older Warrior role models, I know the importance of character and attitude, and that I must lead by example so that I can be the Warrior role model that these young girls dream to be. Because of the character and leadership qualities I possess, I have recently been asked to mentor a young girl by an ATLAS ministries coordinator. I am willing to spend time with this girl and show her that she is cared for and loved by God and so many others in the community. With an unhealthy home life, I need to be there for her when she needs me, and I believe that I am prepared to do this with the qualities and experiences God has given me. I have also served others by cleaning ditches and raking lawns for Key Club. I have served at the annual All Kids Can softball and basketball tournaments by taking gate and doing concessions stand as well. Additionally, in my household, I have to be willing to serve when I may not even notice it. My brother struggles with ADHD, reactive attachment disorder, anxiety, and depression. This can often times be hard for a single mom to handle on her own. I have to be able to be there, by her side, to control him and return him back to his normal state. One service project that
