CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the general introduction of the study. It includes the background of the study, the research questions, the aims of the study, the scope of the study, the hypothesis, the significance of the study, the research methodology, and the definition of terminology.
A. The Background of the Study
Vocabulary is the basic component in learning foreign language. Schmitt, Schmitt, and Clapham (2001) in Coombe (2011) state that “Vocabulary is an essential building block of language and it makes sense to be able to measure learners’ knowledge and use of it”. The Research Questions
The presents study is conducted to accomplish the following questions:
1. Is there any correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their interest in writing?
2. How is the correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their interest in writing?
C. The Aims of the Study
Reviewing the underlying problems, this study aims at accomplishing the following points:
1. To find out whether there is a significant correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their interest in writing.
2. To discover the correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their interest in writing.
D. The Hypothesis
The writer would like to assume the hypothesis of the research. Creswell (2012) states that a hypothesis is statements in a quantitative method where the researcher makes a prediction about the outcome of a study. In this study there will be two hypotheses to support this research paper; they are:
1. The Null Hypothesis (Hₒ) is “There is no significant correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their interest in writing”.
2. The Alternative Hypothesis (Hₐ) is “There is a significant correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their interest in
