Why Is Volleyball Important To Me

Since I could stand up and walk on my own two feet, I have been involved in a plethora of youth sports. Volleyball in particular has had the biggest impact on me and had shaped the woman that I am today. I partake in volleyball activities a majority of the week; consequently, volleyball is very big part of my identity. While some believe that youth sports are a scam and are meant to just dry up the pocket of parents, I really believe that youth sports have taught me important skills that will help prepare me for the life ahead. I go to a fairly small school, therefore I know everyone really well. With volleyball, I have been able to expand my number of friendships with people who are more diverse than the people at my school and who also share a common interest with me. For example, I have a best friend named Kendall who I’ve known since I was 12. I introduced myself to her at a social for my first club team and we became really good friends from the start. She is currently one of my very best friends and we share everything with each other. Getting to know her and becoming one of her best friends is something that you can not just gain at the snap of your fingers. It is something that is developed overtime and is priceless. I strive to be the best at whatever I do, a perfectionist if you will. I haven’t had the easiest path in my life, in both school and volleyball. Nothing was just handed to me on a silver platter, I have always had to work my way up to top. In volleyball, I started out on the lowest team at my club in a position that I had no experience in. While it was tough, I persevered and worked everyday to improve my skill in order to become a starter and play all the way around. My goal was achieved by the end of the season and with that, I also moved up a team in my club. Even though I was alreading improving, I still worked harder because I wanted to be the best setter in the club. The next year I tried out, I moved up a team but I was moved to a different position. I was devastated, all that work just thrown out the window. I contemplated quitting, but instead I took what life threw at me and became the best hitter on that team, earning my spot. I still wanted to be a setter so I worked everyday after school, getting lessons and practicing on my own time in order to improve my skill, though I was faced with a challenge. The next year I made the bold choice to move to a better club and luckily I got on a top team as a setter.
