In Another Man’s Shoes People don’t understand how hard black people were treated and what they had to go through. Harper Lee was a writer in the 1950s who was against racism and putting others down. Through textual evidence and symbolism, we can prove that Harper Lee is trying to symbolize herself as Atticus and the readers as Scout and Jem.
Through textual evidence the readers can prove that Harper Lee is trying to portray herself as Atticus because in the story in chapter 9 when Atticus says “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head up in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” Lee says this because she wants other people to trust her and her beliefs. Also by saying this she shows that if she didn’t defend a negro when she could have she wouldn’t be happy with herself and also wouldn’t want to represent anything.

Therefore, in the chapter she is trying to say that when she can, she will take a shot at taking down racism/racial prejudice. Also this shows that she is nervous about taking down racism because in chapter 10 it says, “Atticus shook his head vehemently: ‘Don’t just stand there, Heck! He won’t wait all day for you—. ‘” This proves that Atticus is worrying about missing the shot and/or showing his kids the side of him that he was trying to get rid
