In Picking Cotton, is a story about how both character life was destroy by a triable crime due to some issue that was happening during the time period the incident happen in 1984. About how during those era how race play in it and how injustice the system was. About how most people were sentences to jail due to racial prejudice or how African American people were not allow in the juries section and how often they were arrested, tried and convicted with a little cause. Furthermore, the author concisely gives as many example throughout the novel about how we should shine light upon the main issues going that was happening around the characters and causes their life to be ruining. In novel, the author by powerfully focus on the controversial issue going on such as the injustice system, false eyewitness, racism and the concept of forgiveness.

We get an insight of it when Cotton went the police station in other to clear his name from such a crime he was being convicted for but arrested instead, due to one of police officer saying “saw your girlfriend earlier. You think you’re Mr. big shot….” (131). This shows how the officer implying that since cotton was dating out of race and the officer not liking the fact of it, assumes because of it he is the main the suspect who commit the crime.
We also found out how injustice the system was in that time period the incident happens when we can clearly see it also during Cotton trail. The author shows as how from the begging of the trail the jury concisely blocks any evidence that Cotton layer was trying to get across about how wrong everything was about the case. And that the evidence that was provided, when put together gives a different answer or proof about what we think we know about the case and putting an innocent man in jail for life plus fifty years.
