Happiness is something humans have been pursuing for centuries. The quest for happiness is so cemented in the minds of human beings that it has been used as a method of control, and as a weapon against others. Humans are moths, ever drawn to the distant flame of joy. Over the past year I have learned much about this pursuit that has plagued humans for millennia. Pieces of literature like The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men and The Devil and Tom Walker all explore this pursuit in unique and diverse ways.
In Happiness: Enough Already, Sharon Begley makes a case for the modern views of happiness and sadness by providing different professional opinions on the the happiness industry, some believe happiness is the sole purpose of life while others believe it is equal to sadness. Jerome Wakefield, a professor at New York University, is approached by many students with complaint concerning their parents’ opinions on dealing with depression, which consist of antidepressants and counseling. Ed Diener, a psychologist, at the University of Illinois, raised to question the idea of a national index of happiness to the Scottish Parliament. In his article "In Pursuit of Happiness: Better Living from Plato to Prozac," Mark Kingwell describes how there has been many debates on the meaning of happiness for many years yet still a singular, justifiable definition eludes society. The pursuit to define and understand happiness has invited several debates, questions, arguments, and suggestions alike. In today’s society, people achieve happiness through interaction with others, but in Ray Bradbury’s dystopian Novel, Fahrenheit 451, his characters believe that they need technology to enjoy their lives. People’s main priority is to be happy and have a successful life. They don’t want to have to worry about anything and just enjoy themselves. “‘You must understand that our civilization is so vast that we can’t have our minorities upset and stirred. Ask yourself, what do we want in this country, above all?
It is important to want to obtain true happiness instead of just having it
Not many achieve happiness in their lifetime. Either they do not live long enough to witness it or they are not prepared for what their happiness is. Happiness is very subjective. Each person’s version of happiness is different. This version of happiness is universal.
The purpose of this essay is to pick apart Mill’s essay and to give my own personal opinion about happiness. Stuart believed that you could achieve happiness by helping others achieve happiness and by finding things that you enjoy in life. I believe the key to happiness is helping other people achieve their happiness, do things that you enjoy doing, and looking at things in the brightest way possible. I honestly believe that everyone wakes up in the morning wanting to be happy, I have never seen a person who wakes up saying, “ I want to have an absolutely miserable day today”. It is human nature to strive for happiness and do things that you enjoy to do.
Happiness is a very hard word to define. To me it means a state of emotion, but it could mean something completely different to someone else. For instance, some might feel that it is a goal in life, that everyone tries to or must achieve, but not for me. I feel it is always a good thing to go through hard times because it shows how strong you are and what you can take. Sometimes I feel so much better letting out my true emotions then keeping them inside and not show anything.
I believe that pursuing happiness as a goal has detrimental effects. As a society, we tend to believe that we need to be full of joy at all times, but that isn't realistic - life happens. By attempting to be cheery all the time, you will never be genuinely content. You will always be searching for more and won't be satisfied with what you have, creating a permanent cycle of gloom rather than bliss.
Happiness is a journey that focuses on positive things. It is not a destiny that is waiting for us. Many people may define happiness in different ways, because happiness is everywhere and it is easy to find.some of the population say that happy people are born with it, but that's is not true, they are just smart to find it. A person can choose to be happy, because happiness is a choice and if you keep choosing it every second in your life, happiness is gonna choose you back. As I mentioned earlier since happiness is a journey, we are responsible to make it to stay longer with us. ''
Individuals have multiple ways to pursue happiness such as letting go of extreme ways of relating to your happiness, reflecting on the activities that give you joy, and scheduling them into your upcoming week. Those that are lost and confused, and running from their past may look for new ideas, or a new stable way of living. Throughout this journey many may renew their sense of faith with the actions of others.
To start with, one way that we can achieve happiness is by experiences. The article “You Can Buy Happiness, If It’s An Experience” says, “ A growing body of research has shown that experiences tend to make people
Happiness is everywhere, if you find it, discover it, and experience it, it will make you feel that life is so meaningful. Happiness, if you have it, your life will be colored, valuable, and happy as if it were God. He can change the fate of your life; happiness is like the switch of life. If you lose happiness, you lose confidence. Losing confidence is equivalent to losing your life.
People miss the fact that happiness comes from within. In an attempt to find joy – we must also be cautious about over excessive desire to acquire material objects and wealth. There is a delicate balance that must be reached between the pursuit of happiness, satisfaction, and contentment. While there are many conditions that fulfill ones emotional wellbeing, happiness and how we acquired it, depends upon the
