In the book several neighboring slave owners are mentioned including: Mr. Litch, Mrs. Wade, and Mr. Conat. To start, though, Mr. Litch, who creates unique ways in torturing his slaves by means of even starvation and murder.1 In addition to this torture, Harriet mentions a neighbor of Mr. Litch, Mr. Conat, who was not as discussed in the book, punished a slave by forcing him to spend a winter night outside and naked. I have been reading a book that I am enjoying it. The name of the book is the Incidents in the life of a slave Girl. Harriet Ann Jacobs was born a slave in Edenton, North Carolina in 1813. The book talks about a girl that she did not know she was a slave, but later on, she has found out that she is a slave. She explores the struggles and sexual abuse that female slaves faced on plantations as well as their efforts to practice motherhood and protect their children when their children might be sold away.

As stated in the title, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, the life of Harriet Jacobs is one of oppression and bondage. The incidents that occur are gendered, meaning the threat of rape by her slave master and his jealousy over her happen because she is a woman. Though Jacobs does not have agency or freedom over her body, there are two instances where she does have the freedom to choose, specifically in romantic choice. The setting revolves around the life experiences from Harriet herself from when she was 6, she doesn’t know whether she was a slave or not until her mother finally dies; her masters were Dr. Flint and his wife Mrs. Flint. In her narrative “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” Harriet Jacobs expresses the experience of female slaves must endure from their masters. Jacobs is in constant fear of her current master which leads to her inevitable escape from his clutches. Dr. Flint is in a continuous search for Jacobs while she is on the run and uses her beloved family against her. He puts Jacobs in a constant struggle and mental deterioration over the course of his life. Dr.Flint’s endless search for Jacob, the burning desire of affection toward her and the pain Jacobs has to endure is what separates Dr.Flint from the rest of the antagonists.

Often, illiterate African American slaves were encouraged to tell their life stories to white writers who wrote them down. African American abolitionists produced nonfiction, such as Nat Turner’s pamphlet The Confessions of Nat Turner (1831), and drama, such as William Wells Brown’s The Escape, or a Leap for Freedom (1858), the first African American play.

Jacobs used the pseudonym Linda Brent to keep the identity in secret. In the narrative, Jacobs appears as a strong and independent woman, who is not afraid to fight for her rights. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was published in 1961, but was unveiled almost 10 years later due to the different slave narrative structure. Frequently, the slave narratives were written by men where they fight against the slavery through literacy by showing their education.
