The incompatibility of truth and happiness clearly displayed throughout Brave New World through the characters John and Bernard. The story takes place in Central London, In both the new made World state and the reservation. Bernard Marx is from World State and John is from the reservation, while they were both raised in different places, they are somewhat similar in the way that both characters are unsatisfied with the way of life and have to work through many challenges throughout their lives.
While he doesn’t make an appearance in the novel until chapter 7, John plays a pivotal role in the novel. John was born to Linda when she visited the reservation with the D.H.C. Because Linda was left behind on the reservation, John was born and raised in the Savage community. John never fit in because he didn’t look like the others and his …show more content…

When John first met Bernard he wanted to go to the World State because he thought it was the “perfect place” because his mother had fondly told stories about it. He is sadly disappointed when he arrives in World State because he realizes it isn’t as wonderful as he had hoped it would be. He finds out that nobody reads for pleasure and the only way they get pleasure is by doing brainless activities and doing soma. When Linda takes him to the feelies, he finds it moronic and doesn’t understand the purpose. He expects it to be more like the reality he had read about in Shakespeare, but he is dissatisfied
