The Fair Labor Standard Act of 1938 (FLSA) was signed on Saturday, June 25, 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, according to dol.gov. This labor act was created to ban overbearing child labor and it set the minimum wage at 25 cents and the maximum work sheet at 44 hours. As of January 1, 2017, District of Columbia has the highest paying minimum wage salary at $11.50 per hour, while Georgia has the lowest at $5.15 per hour, and other states like Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee not having a minimum wage salary at all. As a child of a single parent, and someone who is also attending college with very little help, I could argue both issues about increasing minimum wage. According to my research, all states are trying to increase their minimum wage to help single-parent families and others out with their financial needs. Some are not able to afford food, shelter and clothing because the cost of living is constantly being increased and the minimum wage is only increasing by a third percent of that. Imagine how it would be if the single-parent had to do this on his or her own without any government assistant, it would be stressful and even more stressful if the company couldn’t afford to pay the increased minimum wage and had to lay off some people. Most people won’t look at the fact of how it would affect other, and they would only look at the down fall and how the increase of minimum wage would bring down the community because most companies began to lay off workers once they realize that they aren’t needed
