Since the initiation of the Fair Labor Standard Act of 1938, there has always been an argument for fair wages. Politicians’ argument about a person’s worth in regards to their work to gain appreciation from low income workers. If a company increased their pay from six dollars an hour to twelve dollars an hour, the company would need to compensate in other ways to make profit. To compensate for this higher wage, the company would then have to fire one third of all employees. Also, hours and benefits would be reduced, if not cut all together, for current employees. Does the pro of getting the opportunity to make more money negate the fact that you may not have a job? And if you still have a job, the benefits that you have grown accustomed to and now rely on, will cease to exist. This places a strain on one’s ability to provide for themselves and possibly their family. If the government increases minimum wage, it could destroy our economy.
Companies survive on profitability. If a business is forced to increase the minimum wage they pay their employees, the company would need to make cuts in order to compensate for the loss of profit. The government has some beneficial services to those who attend college. There is a program, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, which allows certain graduates to receive forgiveness on their student loans. If individuals were taught early on about the existence of such programs, they would be less hesitant to attend college due to fear of major debt once graduated. Debt is a major concern for those considering college; they do not want to begin the next step of their life with massive debt.
