Lilly Fuller-Delmont 1/17/18 S.S8 DBQ Essay Per.3 In the mid 18th century settlers moved to the west. Their move brought them more opportunities and a better lifestyle on the frontier. Such as the transcontinental Railroad.
The First Fleet is known today as the first eleven ships that carried the convicts that are now recognised as the Founders of Australia. (Hill, 2008.) In 1787, 1500 criminals were shipped off to the land of Australia found by Captain James Cook, from Portsmouth, England. The voyage was nearly 20,900 kilometres and it took 252 days. The European settlers, had a significant impact on the land and people of Australia, including the introduction of disease, convict labour, and malnutrition.
The extensive labor caused the death of many of the indigenous men and since most of the men had to work in the mines, the birth rate for the indigenous population
After the Civil War ended many people were in hope of finding land since population was increasing. Since the West was underdeveloped and uncivilized, many decided to expand the land. First the Louisiana Purchase increased the opportunity of expansion. Then industrialization and the Homestead Act also caused many companies encouraged to move West due to the low cost of land and that the transportation was provided through the railroads. In order to complete such goals, something had to be done with the Natives since it conflicted with their home area.
In the early 1600’s, indentured servants, usually someone from a poor class in England would sell their labor for a term of four to seven years for the opportunity to travel across the Atlantic and be funded by a master/farmer. After reviewing “A Contract for Indentured Service (1635)” the blank contract I referenced indicates a term of four to seven years to be completed. The contract promises to pay the servant in meat, drinks, apparel and lodging during his time as an indentured servant. After the term is completed the master is required to provide his former servant: clothing, three barrels of corn, and fifty acres of land. The risks that potential indentured servants had to consider when migrating to the American colonies were the bad
Tobacco was the basis of economic life and a motivation for settling down in Jamestown. This helped result in an increase of settlers. The English expansion sparked war in 1622 led by Opechancanough. This war resulted in a tragic death of about a third of the nation. Particularly, the English inhabitants seized Indian’s land and food, cornering the Indian citizens towards limiting possibilities; needless to say they ended up dispersing.
It was also because the only people who were given the right to vote and power were white male landowners. This gave rise to a local elite known as the "tobacco colony," which was run by wealthy Englishmen who made substantial profits from their land through tobacco farming. Their labor force consisted of indentured servants, people brought over on a seven-year labor contract, and enslaved
Even though the German has mixed experiences with Pennsylvania, the indentured servants, women and slaves were the ones that could not see best out of Pennsylvania. The indentured servants were bound to their masters when they arrived in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately for them, they were considered unfree rather than a “freemen” (39). These servants were usually held for four years then exchanged for payment to be sold to a new masters. Luckily for the indentured servants they were not unfree permanently in Pennsylvania.
Their need to keep control over the “Indians” by putting them under ward ship of the government made this goal of individual mindset unachievable. For individual mindset to work, the individual must be able to control his own actions and not be controlled by someone else. Instead of tribal leaders guiding the individual tribesmen for their collective good, the government wanted to control them for the government’s advantage. On a broader scale this allotment enabled the government to consolidate the Native Americans into smaller space. The farming traditions of the white people requires less land than the traditional ways of the tribes.
Business owners made lots of money from the railroads because they were able to transport goods farther and faster with ease. Although the railroads tremendously impacted businesses and therefore the economy, the native americans were negatively impacted because the railroads were being laid on “their” land. This caused distrust between the settlers and the natives because of the “disrespect” for the land. Because of the new ways of transportation, the industrial revolution took place causing skilled artisans to be replaced by unskilled workers that used large complex machines.
I am enlightened by your desire to come join me here in Jamestown, but life has been a never ending roller coaster as the years slowly pass by. Some days I wonder if leaving the slums to avoid my peasant status was worth risking making an attempt at creating a new life in Jamestown. I have trouble falling asleep as I am persistently worrying about whether or not I will wake up the next morning, or if I will die in my sleep during a surprise Indian attack. Even tobacco alone cannot soothe my nerves and paranoia, nor can the money that has been produced from the tobacco market keep my mind in a state of peace. Even though the colony has recently prospered from the blooming tobacco business, I would strongly recommend for you all to refrain from coming here unless you enjoy an indentured servant life, constant Native American threats, and terrible living conditions.
Westward expansion gave the US access to various types of nature they didn’t have access to before. Prairies, deserts, and plentiful amounts of bison were among them any resources the American settlers exploited on their journeys through the west. The vast amount of land that was available was used immediately to grow crops such as corn and wheat despite the fact that the grassland they were using were not adept to growing those types of crops consequently changing the land and its capabilities. The animals in the exploited areas suffered as another result of the change and degeneration of the land; animals began to die out due to lack of food and shelter. Settlers also began to exploit animal populations through mistreatment.
In his letter he described his life as an indentured servant as one where he has nothing to comfort him but sickness and death. The life that he was living in colonial Virginia was one where you couldn’t escape or else you will be captured. Attempting it could of cause him to die, therefore he hoped his parents brought his escape but with his parents being poor there was no way of escaping the life of an indentured servant. Having no escape as an indentured servant, he wrote to his parents a letter asking that his parents bought out the indenture. In his letter, he wrote that he was trapped in a place filled of diseases that can make any body weak and leave you with lack of comfort and rattled with guilt.
The problem started when farms started producing more tobacco and, families did not bear enough children to work on these growing farms. Indians were out of the equation since they died out from disease. At this time, African
Settlers appreciated the existence of the Native Americans well sustained cropping system. According to the reading, the settlers valued the methods used by the Native Americans in maintaining their rich soil and their fertilization practice to produce sufficient amount of crops. In addition, expansion didn’t come entirely from the means of violence, European diseases managed to eliminate a large Native American population. “The colonizers interpreted these Indian deaths as divinely sanctioned opportunities to take the land”. In response, many colonizers did in fact take over the lands or territories ridden of Native American leadership or population due to the disease.
