Independence of Hawaii The year is 1898. Amidst the Spanish-American war, the United States annexed Hawaii as the 50th state. Prior to annexation, Hawaii was ruled by local Kings and Queens in a monarchy. The monarchy had a mutual relationship with the US, but had high tensions as who between the two would have more power. In 1891, Queen Liliuokalani replaced the constitution of 1887 with her own constitution that granted her superior power, With affairs between the monarchy and the United States high, a group named the “Committee of Safety” led by Stanford Dole created a coup against the Queen supporting the United States. With this history, I created a plan for Hawaii to successfully secede the United States and prosper as an independent nation. If Hawaii were to declare secession from the United states, the biggest problems that come to mind would be the political, economical, and cultural problems that would have to be faced. The type of the government that Hawaii should have is most likely not going back to monarchy. Although effective, a monarchy would require a royal family, which Hawaii currently does not have. Hawaii is one of the most beautiful and visited places in the world. With upwards of 7 million visitors in 2020 alone, the majority of the economical landscape revolved around tourism. The statistics back it up, with a fifth of the economy revolving around tourism. This includes hotels, motels, restaurants, and amusement locations. Gaining independence from the US would in fact boost the economy. Visitors to Hawaii must follow and go through US requirements and that largely limits the amount of people being able to go in. By gaining independence the economy would grow exponentially with millions of extra dollars being made through more tourists. However one problem that a country that focuses so much on money coming in from outside the borders would be pandemics and lockdowns. A pandemic like the coronavirus would largely cripple the Hawaii economy due to a lack of travel. To counter this, other industries within the country would have to step up, such as the agriculture industry and manufacturing. Having so much open un urbanized land allows for a lot of farming. Pineapple, coconuts, coffee, and sugarcane are some of the most grown foods. For manufacturing, Hawaii is one of the world's biggest producers/manufacturers of rum and liquor. A closer look at Hawaii's statistics include its GDP per capita, 15,891. Compared to countries in the UN, Hawaii would rank in the top 15. In
