Unwind is a science fiction book that was published in 2007 by Neal Shusterman, it was one his many science fiction books. Unwind is set in a near future where another civil war has broken out, this war is known as the Heartland War. In Unwind, the main characters run all over the USA, but spend most of their time in The Graveyard that is located somewhere in Southwest Arizona. Shusterman demonstrates the theme of independence of the whollies through the Unwind society and Connor’s kicking AWOL to the society. In the story, Unwind our main character is Connor Lassiter. He is a very kind person to those that don’t upset him, the reason why Connor is kind is not only because he saved the storked baby, but that when he first met Hayden he knew that Hayden probably had had a better life than him, but he still tried to be friends with Hayden. Connor kicked AWOL, which is the act of an unwind running away from going to a harvest camp, because he didn’t want to be turned into spare parts, that everyone claimed were still alive, but there was no proof to back this claim. Connor had to resort to stealing some things when he was on the run from Johnny law. Connor did not actively participate in petty theft and that was not why he was sent to be unwound, but since he was on the run and desperate he did steal to save himself and Risa. Even though Connor was on the run he still had compassion for others. This is shown when he helps save Lev and Risa, even though Lev didn’t originally want to be saved; Connor even saved a baby that had been storked because it had reminded him of a baby that had been storked on his doorstep that his family re-storked.
