Culminating Essay Storytelling is not just a way of sharing the past, it is a powerful way to create a sense of community and shared joy. It helps build community among people and helps preserve culture and identity. Through storytelling, many people become more educated on different aspects of Indigenous ways of knowing, which acts as a form of resistance against attempts to erase their traditions. In“Indians on Vacation” and“The Truth About Stories” by Thomas King (Cherokee and Greek) as well as“The Might of Oneness” by Maynan Robinson (Cree Nation), indigenous joy as a form of resistance is conveyed through storytelling. “Angry geese and cat shit?” “We still managed to raise two pretty good kids, didn't we?” (King, 236) This shows how the act of storytelling not only brings joy to Bird and Mimi but also deepens their connection. They also experience great joy as they reflect on the good times of their past and when their children were younger. To add to that, the truth about storytelling does not only convey Indigenous cultural values but also fosters a sense of community and joy. King shares an important creation story and engages the audience. He uses humour as a way to keep the audience engaged, as seen in his comment “Nonetheless, the talking animals are a problem” (King, 13). This approach amplifies the principle of synergy by uniting the audience through comedy. King can keep the whole audience engaged and entertained by making jokes relating to the story and he creates a shared sense of enjoyment and connection. In addition, The Might of Oneness exemplifies the principle of synergy through Robinson's grandmother's storytelling which maintains their culture throughout
