Indie Tragedies Vs. Blockbuster Comedies

The coexistence between that of the blockbuster and independent film realms in America is rather obscure. In essence both facets of film are very different in all regards and each particular form of filmmaking has its own unique benefits and negative qualities associated with it. Perhaps one can see the most amount of differences in the realm of indie comedies and blockbuster comedies. The depiction of real life comedy and the act of not caring who one offends can be observed through the lens of indie comedies (Hearon 1999). For instance, blockbuster films are littered from head to toe with money, which means the hiring of actors everyone knows (Lewis 2004). Blockbuster films have the money to hire comedians and actors that have become household names. However, this is not usually the case with the realm of indie films. Actors hired for indie films may not be well known, but the level of humor they submit themselves to during the film are no hold barred and are usually not censored to the degree blockbuster films are (Hearon 1999). Having the ability to not hold back in the realm of comedy is one beneficial plus of indie films. The actors may not be well known, but the comedy will never be limited in order to fit a certain appearance of call of judgment. Blockbuster comedies set themselves apart from that of a true indie comedy is the comedians they have on their backburner. For instance, comics who had made a name for themselves through the medium of television were starting to become big screen actors in the late1970’s (Lewis 2004). One comic who was able to make such a leap was Steven Martin who appeared in the the 1979 film “The Jerk.” Indie films are not as lucky when it comes to casting such major roles. Independent comedies do have a loyal fanbase, and perhaps they do have their fare share of famous directors and actors. The Coen brothers have paved their way in the realm of independent auteurs and have established a vibrant fan base over time (Lewis 2004).
