The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) is a federal law that provides partial funding to states to educate the nation's more than six million students receiving special education services. IDEA was previously known as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) from 1970 to 1990. In 1990, the United States Congress reauthorized EHA and changed the title to IDEA. Overall, the goal of IDEA is to provide children with disabilities the same opportunity for education as those students who do not have a disability.
Being an advocate for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, I agree strongly with all sections past, present and future of this Act. This act entails the duties and responsibilities to safely ensure that all children with disabilities have a quality education. The requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act are broken down into four parts (A, B, C, and D), and subcategorized into six issues that make up the IDEIA. Part A of the Act gives a general outline of the act’s purpose and outline, state eligibility, state laws, and terms and definitions used throughout the act. This part of the Act is very important because it gives the requirements on how a child could be qualified. IDEIA funding states must provide free public education to all students with disabilities using an IEP. Students must re-qualify for exceptional education services every three years. Children from three years old to twenty-one years old can receive help from the IDEIA. Most parents think the act stops for their child the time it is time to graduate.
