The Industrial Revolution was a period of major industrialization that took place during the late 1700s and early 1800s. The industrial revolution, beginning in Great Britain quickly spread throughout the world. The process began in England, and from there spread to other parts of the world. The Industrial Revolution began with the textile industry. Making cloth, pants, shirts, and other domestic items by hand required skill, and as populations grew in England, more people needed these items. From this, a series of innovations shifted textile production to a new factory system. The Industrial Revolution created new technologies that lead to factories and child labor. It was a time of rapid change in the world. The first invention was the steam engine, by Thomas Newcomen. Although it was not too important then, the idea idea of using steam to make machines go was important to the Industrial Revolution. James Watt from, Scotland, designed a more efficient steam engine. The steam engine was very important, for it powered the first trains, steamboat, and factories. Some other technological changes included steel, coal, petroleum, and internal combustion engines. Before the 18th century, most of the citizens of the United States lived on farms. However, during the late 1700’s, there was a dramatic shift of the population to cities. Families were being sent into the cities. Farmers were migrating from their farms to the cities. Many people were unemployed and looking for work. Within the cities, there were factories that were introduced in the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Factories provided jobs for millions of people. During this shift, crop yield increased. This means that there was an abundance of food for the people in the cities. Food prices were also decreased, leading to a healthier population and lower death
