Industry Analysis: Youth Development and Afterschool Programs
Youth development, often referred to as positive youth development, is the combination of positive experiences, positive relationships, and positive environments. Youth development aims to engage children and adolescents in positive aspects of their communities, schools, etc. in order to help foster positive relationships, experiences, and environments (“Positive Youth Development,” 2014). However, youth development is a very broad term. It can be applied to programs within schools, after-school programs, community programs, recreational sports programs, summer camps, families, peer organizations, religious youth groups, etc. (“Positive Youth Development,” 2014).

In the mid 1900s, people began to place more emphasis on the importance of positive experiences in both childhood and adolescence (“Chapter One,” 1996). “Increases in juvenile crime and concerns about troubled youth led in the 1950s to the beginning of major federal funding initiatives to address these issues” (“Chapter One,” 1996). The great popularity of and necessity for youth development programs came as a result of this. Problem and risk reduction youth development was initially more prevalent, but more recently, especially in the last 20 years, leaders in the industry have realized the importance of positive youth development as a means of preparation for the future as opposed to prevention and correction of risky or troublesome behavior (“Chapter One,” 1996).
