George Orwell explores the concepts of inequality in his novel Animal Farm. In the beginning of the book, Old Major inspires his audience of animals the revolt by saying “All animals are equal” (Orwell 112) as, what they truly desire is equality, for payment for the work they do and good treatment. “All animals are equal” is made their first commandment, after a revolution, but later changed to “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others” (Orwell 134) as more control is asserted is asserted over the animals by one group. The quote is a note about the hypocrisy of the present leaders, the pigs, claiming that all animal are equal but still allowing them, as the elite, rulers to maintain more control. I believe equality to be that all are given the same opportunities, held to the same standards, and awarded accordingly for the work performed. Historically, equality has played a major role in many important events such as the American Civil war. In the last five years (2013-2017), the awards presented for best actor and best actress have been given to caucasian people. In 2017, nominees for that same awards were 80% caucasian. “Another year, another set of Oscar nominations. For the second year in a row, no black actors have been nominated.
