Equality is the soul of liberty; there is, in fact, no liberty without it, (Frances Wright). Society is teeming with judgement. In this nonfunctional world, the class that individuals are associated with are determined by their levels of wealth, their gender and their social status. Society places people in boxes, for aspects of themselves they can't control. “Can you imagine how frustrating it must be for a triangle, a hexagon or a square, in a world of circular doors?” (Shelby Dziwulski, Ted ex Talk). What others don't have is simply invisible to the privileged ones of society. A continuous, sensitive topic conveyed in many media forms for many years now, is the power men hold over women in society, or vice versa. In The Great Gatsby, the main character is the enigmatic Jay Gatsby. Jay is usually referred to as Gatsby, who lives in a magnificent mansion at West Egg, which is the least fashionable of the two places. It is extremely evident that Gatsby holds significant power and success due to the fact that he is a male. Gatsby's whole purpose across the novel is to claim his dream girl who he hasn't been in contact with for years. This seems unachievable because whilst he is wealthy he has no status in society. The main actors, Mary, Katherine and Dorothy are all successful workers at NASA. However, due to the fact that they are female, their work is constantly being judged, and their gender determines their role in the workplace. Paul Stafford, is an egotistical engineer who constantly criticises Katherine’s work. It is clear to the audience that Stafford perceives his work to be superior, simply because of his gender and the privileges he has been afforded in life. Yet again, Mary who works continuous long hours, had to spend multiple hours at court fighting to attend an engineering course. As demonstrated in the movie, there are countless numbers of male engineers in the country, however the meaning portrayed is that being an engineer is too convoluted for a woman's understanding. Therefore it is obvious that Mary's gender acts as a significant barrier in allowing her to be successful in the engineering field. The producer of Hidden Figures makes it extremely evident that all the people with important roles at NASA are surprisingly males. Not just in the NASA workfield. When the three girls were pulled over by the police, the officer was a male. The judge of Mary's court case, was unpredictably a male. At the first university class Mary attended, of course, the lecturer was male. Melfi effectively incorporates certain scenes to emphasise the male being the dominant gender, and the significant power they
