In the book The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline, this is exactly the case for 15 year old Frenchie, an Indigenous boy who is separated from his family and forced into hiding from Recruiters who are hunting him. In this case Travis and Lincoln were put in a circumstance where their survival was compromised which evokes the primal instinct humans have to survive, even if their actions were immoral and at the cost of other people's lives. This is also demonstrated when Frenchie begins to ponder on what he would do if put in the situation of the Recruiters, who were capturing Indigenous people for their marrow which hold the power to save the human race. He says: “Would we be like them if we'd had a choice… What would I have done to save my parents or Mitch, given the chance? Would I have been able to trap a child , to do what, cut them into pieces? To boil them alive? I shuddered. I didn't want to know what they did. And I didn't really want to know if I'd be capable of doing it” (Dimaline 48). Here we see he begins to question if he would really stick to his current morals and be any different than the recruiters who were killing his people. This demonstrates how human nature is influenced by circumstance and the emotions and instincts that are evoked out of the circumstance because Frenchie infers through this quote that if he were put in a situation where his loved ones lives were at compromise, an instinct to protect them would be evoked influencing his actions to do so no matter what.
