By investigating the policy decisions and negotiations that shaped the construction of the Panama Canal, this article contributes to an understanding of the Roosevelt presidency as a period of significant geopolitical expansion and innovation in American infrastructure and foreign policy. Not surprisingly, when President Theodore Roosevelt's most outstanding accomplishments are mentioned, the acquisition and construction of the Panama Canal is included. His two-term presidency, from 1901 to 190, was marked by significant achievements and efforts for the political and economic well-being and interests of the United States and the positioning of the United States as the dominant power in the Western Hemisphere. Among the achievements could be mentioned his mediation of an end to the Russo-Japanese War, or to mention one in domestic matters, his tactics served to put an end to the Pennsylvania miners' strike of 1902 and obtained a modest wage increase for the miners. However, the most important foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere and in time was the acquisition of the Panama Canal in 1903.
