One of the themes presented by Sue Monk Kidd in, “The Secret Life of Bees” is pushing boundaries. In the book, Lily runs away from her abusive father and stays at a beekeepers house where she would be safe. This beekeepers house is a black family and while she stayed there and everyone was constantly pushing boundaries. The story relates to the article written by Nadra Kareem Nittle which was called, “How the Freedom Riders Movement Began”. This article was about a group of people called freedom riders traveling together to end the Jim Crow laws or other known as, racist laws.
Life is filled with challenges and conflict. However only a few can overcome and escape the confinements of their problems, others remain left behind to struggle. Sue Monk Kidd displays this with the imprisonment that Lily deals with throughout the book. While Lily does finds liberation at the end, she first had to break free from the imprisonments of her secrets, T-Ray, and the torment from killing her mother.
World War 1 began with Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia due to a conflict about murder of members of the royal family in Austria-Hungary. Serbia and Austria-Hungary both had different allies that joined the war shortly after. France, Russia, Britain and Canada joined Serbia in the war, and Germany joined Austria-Hungary. The United States declared that they would remain neutral in the war, a decision that most Americans supported.
The Civil Rights Movement was a time filled with racial discrimination and segregation. During this time of hate, it was difficult for many people to do the simplest simple life necessities. The Secret Life of Bees takes place during the thick of the movement when the Civil Rights Act was passed. Lily Owens is a 14 year old white girl from just outside of Sylvian, South Carolina. Lily lives with her dad, T. Ray Owens, and Rosaleen who is at the house the majority of the time working for T. Ray.
Throughout the Secret Life of Bees, Lily Owens becomes more mature as she lives in the pink house and learns that all people are equal. She also becomes more mature as she learns more about her mother's past, and learns to forgive herself for her death. In the beginning of the book, Lily is selfish and immature. She says that “People who think dying is the worst thing don’t know a thing about life.” Through this, the reader sees how much Lily's life has been affected by her mother's death.
In contrast to endotherms, the ectotherms such as butterflies regulate their body temperature by adapting to the environment. This affects their effectiveness in the environment because they must accommodate with whatever their surroundings provide. Much research was shown by evidence how the honey bees survive low temperatures, but scientists are still hypothesizing on how they deal with higher temperature when evidence shows that honey bees do not stop working in hot temperatures. Scientists compared the honey bees to the bumble bees because they hypothesize that the honey bees function similarly to the bumble bees. Because the bumble bees have large abdomens, they are able to radiate and release their heat and cool down effectively (“How Honeybees Keep Their Cool”).
Coming-of-age activities changed and stayed similar over the years showing how teenagers growing up is different in specific time eras but can be seen as similar too. Coming of age is a transformative period in a person’s life when transitioning from childhood into adulthood. Usually, this person will go through an event that requires them to use new skills and has responsibilities that they did not have as a child but now will have in adulthood. Experiencing loss and having a newfound perception of parents serves as necessary coming-of-age activities that can shape an individual's identity and growth as they transition into adulthood. A honey bees ' wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, making a distinctive buzzing noise (Delaplane). There are many things that people don’t know about bees. Such as when beekeeping started, the difference between hobbyist and commercial beekeepers. There are also different types of bees, different types of honey and different uses of honey. Most people are perfectly fine never encountering a bee or knowing anything about them.
It is spring and you feel a warm spray of sunshine on your back as an insect buzzes by your ear and floats through the air and is lost in the swarm of other bees as it drifts toward the hive. This brings up the question that you have been wondering. What goes on inside a beehive? What do bees do for there job?
This again stops the bees from doing their job of pollinating and stops them from getting the food they need to survive. The community can help bees survive by employing a few tactics. One tactic alone will not cure the bee population degradation but it can help boost the bee population. One local and more personal tactic would be to have a “bee garden” that consists of flowering plants that bees like which include apples, oranges, lemons, limes, cucumbers, carrots, and cantaloupes. Another tactic would be do be more environmentally conscious.
“Beekeepers across the United States lost 44 percent of their honey bee colonies during the year spanning from April 2015 to April 2016” (“Nation’s Beekeepers lost 44 percent of bees in 2015-2016”). Many famers today plant their cops in sections farther apart depending on the plant. When the bees go to collect nectar they cannot get as much food without getting tired. This has had an effect on bees because they die faster from having to fly so far. Many beekeepers think that this reason causes bees to fade away.
So what makes these bees so important? In order to survive, bees must gather pollen and nectar and bring it home to their colony. While they are moving from flower
Bees are major factor in our environment. But recent studies show that we are to blame for the decline in the Bee populations. The main reasons are industrial agriculture (pesticides), mites and climate change. And we should care about them because they provide us with honey and beeswax, and provide a major ecosystem service in the form of pollination. Bees pollinate a lot of crops like apple, citrus, strawberry, blueberry, tomato, melon, oilseed rape, carrot, etc.
