Golf is a very controversial topic because it is well-debated. People do not think of it as a sport. Here is the definition of golf: “a sport in which a player strikes a small ball with various clubs from a series of starting points into a series of holes on a course. The player who hits his ball in the hole with the fewest strokes wins” (Moran et. al. #1 ). It does meet the definition of a sport, which is: “A sport is an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and is often a competitive one”(“The Definition of Sport”). Golf is a sport because it has plenty of history, is competitive, and is popular.
Golf Is Old
It has been well-debated, but golf originated in the Netherlands. The modern game of golf originated in Scotland in the High Middle Ages. There is proof showing this fact: “Taking place on February 26, 1297, in Loenen aan de Vecht, where the Dutch played a game with a stick and leather ball. The winner was whoever hit the ball with the fewest strokes into a target several hundred yards away”(Moran et al. #1). Over the years, the golf ball and club have changeda lot. Currently, the standard club and ball are metal and plastic. “This new design was invented in 1898 it included a rubber core”(“The Evolution of the Golf Ball”).

The holes are hundreds of yards away, not including the small area of land for the ball to land on. The average golfer has a 12,500 to 1 chance of making a hole-in-one. You need to have a strong mindset to be competitive. “You should always find something productive or useful that you can focus on versus getting down on yourself to maintain a good mindset”(“Golf Tip”).
