Alcoholism The topic of alcoholism has always interested me because my dad has struggled with it in the past along with members in my family. All you want for them is for them to get help but it's not that easy because they don't think they have a problem. Growing up with my dad being a alcoholic made it hard because I knew it was hard on my mom and he got aggressive when he drank. Because of my father, i've wondered what the leading reason for alcoholism is and how a person recovers. Though some causes are more common than others, peer pressure is a big cause for underage drinking because many believe it's the best or only way to have fun while socializing. The three medicines that may be given are antabuse, campral, and ReVia. Antabuse works by making you feel sick to your stomach when you take the medicine and drink while you are on the medicine. Campral works to reduce cravings of alcohol through altering the levels of certain brain chemicals or receptors (1). ReVia blocks the effects of drugs known as opioids( a class that includes morphine, heroin, or codeine). It competes with these drugs for opioid receptors in the brain (2). Behavior modification modifies your behavior based on past experiences. If past experiences of doing something led to a positive outcome, the individual will be more likely to do it again in the future. This explains why people begin abusing alcohol; Once they associate alcohol or drugs with reward they will have an increasing desire to abuse them again in the future (4). Abstinence is probably one of the hardest ways to quit your addiction. Abstinence is restraining from alcohol when around it. 50% to 60% remain abstinent at the end of a year's treatment and a majority of those stay dry permanently
