ALCOHOLISM Alcoholism is the state whereby one has a problem with drinking alcohol and becomes addicted which makes him/her an alcoholic. Alcoholics are so much into alcohol that they cannot control their drinking even though it causes serious problems with their families, work-place, and their finances. The sole purpose of writing this article to educate on the side effects of alcoholism and alcohol abuse and also acts guide those fallen victims to their way to recovery. Heavy drinking can affect the psychological order that make drinking the only way to avoid discomfort. What are some of alcohol related problems? Heavy drinking can lead to multiple health problems. As a matter of fact, 100,000 Americans die from alcohol-related causes each year. Long-term effects are as follows: • Heart problems. Alcoholism enables one to have cardiomyopathy which is the damage of the heart muscles, stroke and heart failure. • Problems of the nervous system. Excessive consumption of alcohol leads to dementia, numbness, and confused thinking. This is because alcohol interferes with the brain. • Liver diseases. The patient is at a high risk to develop cirrhosis and hepatitis. Cirrhosis is a long-term condition and is not reversible. • Fetal alcohol syndrome. Pregnant mothers who take alcohol are likely to have babies with defects such as small heads, shortened eyelids, heart problems and cognitive problems. • Hypertension. Progressive intake of alcohol leads to high blood pressure of the patient. • Thinning of bones.
