According to Greenfacts.org “Over 76 million people are currently affected by alcohol use disorders, such as alcohol dependence and abuse.” This comes in many forms; alcohol abuse, alcohol poisoning and alcohol-related deaths, making this a matter of global concern. Alcohol increases the brain's production of the hormone dopamine; this causes euphoria and sociability, teenagers continue to drink as they become hooked on the feeling, using alcohol to escape reality. Although these unhealthy drinking patterns can return to affect them as adults, as it will be a natural instinct to turn to alcohol when they are stressed, angry or upset, significantly increasing the risk of developing an alcohol disorder. Alcohol consumption does not only affect the victim but it imposes economic and social costs on society, alcohol abusers make more use of healthcare services than the general population. The economic consequences of alcohol consumption can be severe. This is not only due to the amount spent on drinks, but also to lost wages, and to medical and other expenses. A 2009 study conducted by Alcohol.org.nz estimated that “harmful alcohol use cost New Zealand $4.9 billion in 2005/06.” Alcohol abuse can often result in injuries such as fights or falls, according to Alcohol.org.nz “Between 18% and 35% of injury-based emergency department presentations are estimated to be alcohol-related, rising to between 60% and 70% during the weekend.” Alcohol abuse can also result in intentional injuries such as sexual assault, domestic violence, Increased family issues and broken relationships.
