Life is full of twists and turns, some of them are filled with happiness, but others are filled with sorrow. A sorrow-filled twist I have endured is losing my beloved aunt to breast cancer; therefore, I feel a personal connection to this cancer, and would like to learn all I possibly can about it, so I may learn how to better protect myself from it. Although I have endured a loss due to breast cancer I’m not alone, for an estimated 43,000 deaths will occur this year alone from this deadly cancer (Breast Cancer Facts and Figures). Hundreds of thousands of individuals battle this cancer, and although breast cancer is more commonly associated with women, men can also develop it, which puts everyone affected through pain and suffering due to the …show more content…

Surgery, which surgically removes the cancer, has a 17% chance survival rate in stages 1 and 2, 7% in stage 3 and 3% in stage 4. Radiation is the “use of high-energy beams or particles to kill cancer cells,” and has a 1% survival rate in stages 1 and 2, 4% in stage 3, and 48% in stage 4 (Breast Cancer Facts and Figures). While the survival rates of the available treatments are important, other statistics concerning breast cancer are as well, for example, that an estimated 252,710 women and 2,470 men worldwide will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,610 women and 460 men are expected to die from it (Breast Cancer Facts and Figures). Also, non-Hispanic blacks have the most breast cancer related deaths at 29.5, followed by non-Hispanic whites coming in at 20.8, followed by Native Americans at 14,3, the Latinas at 14.2 and finally Asians at 11.3 (Breast Cancer Facts and Figures). Interestingly, the average age to get diagnosed with breast cancer is 62, and leading an inactive lifestyle can cause a huge increase in the risk
