Lastly, vitamin D deficiency has been linked to the recurrence of breast cancer in other parts of a woman 's body. Advancements in prostate cancer include new research in gene changes that will help understand how the cancer develops. Some hereditary genes that have specific components of the DNA have been found to actually increase the risk of cancer in men. Many scientists have discovered that substances in some foods aid in lowering the risk of contracting the cancer. Lastly, a new treatment made is high intensity focused ultrasound or HIFU, which is used to kill cancer cells in early stages by using high focus ultrasonic

In the first half of our learning seminar class, we focused on the desire for knowledge. We have mainly focused on the desire to improve our understanding of the universe and what is inside our universe. The Emperor of All Maladies is a book about cancer and how humans have been researching it for hundreds of years. From century to century, humans still hold onto their sense of wonder about cancer and how it truly works. Sometimes our sense of wonder is not always the best thing.
In the late 1940s, scientific research began taking off as innovative technologies and diseases were being created and discovered. One important field of study during the time was cancer. Like many types of new research, there were a few problems getting the ball on the roll. One problem scientists faced was obtaining cancerous cells that would stay long enough to study. One scientist struggled with this until a particularly unique strand of cells came along.
In the US, cancer is the second major cause of death. Cancer is the uncontrolled division of somatic cells caused by defective cancer cells. Usually, when cells divide, they begin to form a layer. Normal cells will experience contact inhibition, where cells can cease to replicate once there is no more space for it to inhabit. However, cancer cells cannot control their division.
When I see somebody with cancer, I get really mad, I say to myself, ”Why must this disease be real. Why did God create something so horrible that it can affect anybody.” If it was I who had ten million dollars, I would donate it to St.Jude's Cancer Research Facilities because it is a deadly disease, it is a real-nonprofit research organization, and it covers all expenses for families. Cancer is among the top ten leading causes of death in the world. This disease takes nearly eight million lives every year.
Jeffrey Kluger’s discusses in his article “Why Curing Cancer is Not a ‘Moonshot,’” his opinion on how, and why, the cure for cancer can not be compared to a moonshot. Many Presidents, including Barack Obama and Richard Nixon, have preached about the “war on cancer,”. Many have referred to curing cancer as a moonshot. According to Kluger, a moonshot is not nearly as difficult as curing cancer.
The daily killer of over twenty thousand people and over 7.3 million people a year has heavily affected families all over the world for centuries. Because this disease has over 100 types and has proven lethal for so many men, women, and children everywhere, cancer has earned the the title of being the number one cause of death in the United States and one of the top causes of death in the world as a whole. Many scientists and doctors have tried to solve the medical puzzle that is cancer, but no definite cure has been discovered. However, tons of progress has been made and treatments have changed drastically since before 1950 compared to today. (Paddock 2007)

“Mr. Srivastava, we’re sorry, but she didn’t make it.” These are the nine words that were spoken to my father on November 19, 2007. This day was the most unforgettable day of my life, because it was the last time I heard my mother’s voice and I shall never forget her words to me or the doctor’s words to my father. I can still remember my mother giving me a hug before I went to school, coming home from school in a good mood, seeing my dad waiting anxiously, going to the hospital, and eventually realizing that my mother was gone forever.

Cancer is an abnormal production of cells that divide uncontrollably within the body (Black & Hogan 2006). What is more vaguely understood are the mechanisms the underlie this, the different effects on each patient, and how to stop it. Some common types of cancer are breast cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, leukemia, and brain cancer. Each of these various diagnoses cause different biological and psychological stresses on the patient. Because old cells do not die and instead grow out of control, often, a mass will form, otherwise known as a tumor.
