Honoring Our Veterans Why do we, the people of the United states of America, honor veterans every November 11th? We honor these brave men and women, because they fought for our country, they keep it safe, and they preserve and protect our freedom and the freedoms of others. Veterans are important to our Nation’s history and future; therefore, we should honor them for their service,their sacrifice, and give them recognition for all they have done. Our veterans have sacrificed so much to pay the price of our freedom. Many men and women have lost their lives in battles against our country and others that we made promises to protect. Post-traumatic stress affects about seven million seven hundred thousand American adults, of those people two million eight hundred thousand are veterans from either the Afghanistan or Iraq wars. A veteran is constantly struggling to recover from their experiences that they had in their service.Veterans should be recognized for the many struggles they faced in battle and the struggles they may go through today. We recognize all of our veterans on a National holiday, called Veterans Day.This day of celebration wasn’t always called Veterans Day, it use to be called Armistice Day. Armistice Day honored only the veterans from World War I. After the Korean War, Armistice Day was officially changed to Veterans Day, to honor all veterans. The holiday, known as Veterans Day, celebrates all of those who fought in battle. Veterans Day reminds us of what that our veterans had to go through. It is important to remember our veterans and the soldiers who died in battle and it is also important to remember what they have done to protect our country. Honor and remembrance of our veterans and our soldiers killed in battle can be done through memorials, which commemorate the brave men and women who have fought for our county. Some of these memorials are the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, the Vietnam Wall Memorial, the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial, and the World War II
