The most decorated Olympian, and the most medals out of any Olympic athlete. It is all the same person and his name is Michael Fred Phelps. So how did he become famous and why is he so famous, he is just a swimmer? What is he doing now, is he still swimming? Does he do anything but swim, does he have an good education? Let’s find out right now (Michael)! It all started on June 30, 1995 in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents are Fred and Debbie Phelps. He went to the University of Michigan where his coach Bob Bowman taught the swim team (Sapet 93). But he could not swim there since he was making money as a professional athlete. He did the next best thing and helped coach the team (Goldish 19). He still had free time so he co-founded a program called “Swim With The Stars”, he and other swimmers went to school and talked to parents and kids about the importance of healthy living and eating. He also taught kids how to swim for free. He said that it “felt good to help others learn to do what he loved so much, and that some of these kids would never be able to swim without someone helping them and teaching them along the way” (Goldish 22-23) After he had done that for a while and people saw how caring he was he stared to get a lot of brand deals but the biggest was with Speedo. So he took it and after a while they saw a chance to make him even faster if they could get him to tie Mark Spitz, record for the 100 meter Butterfly, that he would get a 1 million dollar bonus.
