Before I was born, before my mother was born, my grandmother gave birth to a little girl weighing one lb. and eleven oz. Her name was Danielle, her kidneys and lungs weren't developed, and the physician diagnosed her with Hydronephrosis: a condition where the kidneys cannot function correctly. At the young age of ten days, Danielle was taken into open heart surgery. Sadly, the surgery didn't help for as long as the physicians hoped it would, and her conditions eventually overcame Danielle at the age of eighteen months. Almost twenty years later, I was born, and I seemed perfectly fine, until they were sending me home. They took one final x-ray and discovered I couldn’t digest my food because my intestines were full of air pockets. I stayed …show more content…
It so happens that similar surgeries happen on adults too, but children are more resilient. They believe in magic. Miracles happen- not often, especially in the medical world- but they do exist. The main reason pediatrics appeals to me is because most of these children don’t deserve this pain, whether it's appendicitis or short bowel syndrome. Children are just starting to see the world, or they haven’t started yet. The challenge that comes with working on children and even newborns is something I would love to take on. I would get to work with many different types of personalities and not every child is the same. There are many different types of cases you can encounter according to Antonio Francesco Corno. “It is our responsibility to protect them from a variety of dangers including, but not limited to, interruptions during pregnancy, genetic anomalies, prenatal injuries, congenital defects, malnutrition, environmental diseases, infections, poverty, traumas, violence, and exploitation”(Corno). Some challenges aren't the surgery, some come from the parents or the emotional stability of the child. In most cases surgery is scary to the children, or they might be scared to be put under by the anesthesiologist. There are many uphill battles that I am morje than ready to take on including the training to get …show more content…
On John Hopkins’ website for pediatric surgery, it mentions how wide the gap is for patients. “Pediatric surgeons take care of children from the newborn period through the teenage years” (John Hopkins). This involves a great deal of learning and empathy; this is why I got started early in my high school career. I have taken Health Professions and Medical Terminology classes to get accepted into the medical program at Skyview High School. After being accepted, I took EMT I, and Anatomy and Physiology; I am currently working my way through EMT II and AP Biology. However, these are only bookwork classes, so I have prepared myself by participating in hands on experience too. I have competed in HOSA, Future Health Professionals of America, for two years. I placed second in the state-wide competition with my partner, and then competed in the national competition for one of the two years I’ve participated. On top of this, my grandparents offered to send me to a National Leadership Conference for the medical program. It was eleven days long, and I made a tremendous amount of friends and got a great deal of experience. With this knowledge of the medical world, I want to run head first into my
