Why dance is a sport? Imagine this. You are behind stage waiting for the previous dance to end. Your heart beats fast, knowing that you have worked endless hours to perfect your routine. Many athletes do not believe that dance is a sport. According to the heritage dictionary, the definition of a sport, is an activity or skill that involves physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against others. Dance is a sport, and I am here today to prove it to you. Dance requires abdominal strength, rhythm, and balance. In order to be able to dance you need to have specific “equipment”. You are going through your tights, leotards, and shoes. Oh no! You realize that your tights have a small rip, your leotard is just a bit too small, and shoes are so tight that you feel your foot going numb. What sport do you like to play? Football, baseball, or maybe even soccer? Well, has your jersey ever felt too tight, or maybe you have misplaced your lucky socks? Having the right attire is important in any sport, including dance. There are many styles of leotards to choose from, but having the right one can help you move more easily, and freely. Leotards are made to be formfitting, and accentuate every move. There are different materials of leotards, which include Lycra, spandex, and even cotton. Spandex is a better choice, because it tends to last longer than cotton. Tights are also important. The right colour and fabric can make all the difference. For Jazz, tan tights are the right choice. However, a soft pink colour is for ballet. Lastly, shoes are a significant part of dance too. For instance, in ballet, ballet shoes help to accentuate your feet. However, in tap, tap shoes; help to make the right sounds.
