Today I’m writing about hurricane Ike which hit Galveston, Texas on Sep.13, 2008 at 2:10 am. It was a category 2 hurricane with winds of 110 mph. The people of Galveston got rainfall totals up to ten inches. Leaving them without power for days. With wind power up to 110 there are going to be severe damages to houses and also at least 103 deaths total. This devastating storm definitely left a mark on the Galveston people forever. At this point I know what you’re thinking how did hurricane Ike start? Hurricane Ike started like any other tropical cyclone. It started over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. All hurricanes form over warm oceans near the equator because moist air is needed to fuel them. The moist air rises up causing the areas below to have a lower air pressure. As the warm air keeps on rising it will cool off. Then the water in the surrounding air will form into dark gray cumulonimbus clouds. The …show more content…

Hurricane Ike was one of the most costly hurricanes to hit the United States setting a record 50 billion dollars in damages at the time. Newly built homes were now several pieces of rubble on the floor. Operating infrastructures, several if not all damaged. This made several residents of this town flee decreasing the town’s population. Before hurricane Ike there were 57,000 residents, now 48,000. Which is 9,000 less. This has also made opportunities for business scarce. Only being lenient to people who are looking to be in construction, medicine, and tourism. They are also rebuilding better medical schools and hospitals. Due to the severe flooding. Even though this is a major problem, residents of Galveston are suffering from mishandled claims. They have started to sue the TWIA (Texas Windstorm Insurance Association). This insurer has also paid billions to Texas homeowners. Even though it caused so many deaths and troubles.
