Her bones were found in Ethiopia. Lucy is an example of a “missing link” between apes and us. She also has been called “mother of all humankind”. They use Lucy, Australopithecus meaning “southern ape”, to close the gap between apes and us. Paleontologists have anaylzed that most apelike fossils to be our ancestors, called hominids. They think that Lucy falls in the evolutionary timeline of apelike and us. They only care where she fits, not if. Biblical creationist belive that Lucy might be human or ape, but not in process in changing one to another. Lucy has 47 of 207 bones, but the bones are mostly small remains with many pieces missing. This is what I was informed of in the article. Donald Johanson (paleoanthropologist) was in Ethiopia, specifically camping in a rea called Hadar. He was there for a couple of weeks with a group of scientists trying to find fossils. One of the guys was named Tom Gray. He was a graduate student that went there to study the fossils animals and plants. He also went there to study the relationships of what used to live there in the past and what the climate was like. Donald reason to be there was hominid fossils. In other words, the bones of human ancestors and their relatives. He was also interested in the evidence for human evolution. The fossils they studied were very rare. They went to Locality 162 and were trying to find exposed fossils. They weren’t finding anything so they left, but they went to the bottom of a valley. When they were walking, Donald saw a hominid arm. Then he saw the back of a small skull, then a thigh bone, and then a part of a pelvis. They kept finding stuff that were all hominid. They also found ribs and pieces of jaw. Then they went back, but Tom lost his cool and told everyone. Then everyone went to the valley and collect the fossils.
