Heavy metal music was born when Black Sabbath set the standard as the first heavy metal band with the release of their self-titled album in 1970. Sabbath's compositions and performances were minimalistic in form and execution. What they lacked in complexity, Black Sabbath compensated for in terms of power and intensity forging an entirely new and unique musical path (Pearlin). 4. While taking cues from Hard Rock, Metal took its musical ideas into new territory, where an emphasis on volume and distortion came to represent a vision of power that resonated deeply with Metal’s overwhelmingly male fan base.
