Introduction I. Tolling church bells and pouring rain are sounds typically associated with funerals. They also marked the birth of heavy metal, after being used as the introduction to Black Sabbath’s 1970 debut (Christie). But did Black Sabbath really invent heavy metal? II. Heavy metal music was born when Black Sabbath set the standard as the first heavy metal band with the release of their self-titled album in 1970. Sabbath's compositions and performances were minimalistic in form and execution. What they lacked in complexity, Black Sabbath compensated for in terms of power and intensity forging an entirely new and unique musical path (Pearlin). 4. While taking cues from Hard Rock, Metal took its musical ideas into new territory, where an emphasis on volume and distortion came to represent a vision of power that resonated deeply with Metal’s overwhelmingly male fan base. VII. The evolution of heavy metal music during the 1970s. A. Heavy metal becomes refined musically and defines its “uniform” from 1972 to 1978. 1. Deep Purple set the standards for today’s heavy metal music with more complex instrumentals, introduction of pyrotechnics and soaring vocals in 1972. Doyle 3 2.
