Have you ever been made fun of because of your gender or skin colour? This happens to many people and it creates a lack of self confidence and happiness. Injustice based off of conditions that are uncontrolable is completely illogical and absurd, yet it still occurs. When forced to respond to injustice, specific groups such as the isolated, the negroes, and females may experience extreme amounts of fear and discomfort which results in distrust and frustration towards others in the community. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the citizens who reside in Maycomb experience and witness injustice on a daily basis. Black individuals are constantly treated as though they are lesser than white citizens just because their skin colour is different. Since the white community in Maycomb was so racist, black individuals would be paranoid because they never truly knew when someone would strike. Black individuals were scared of the white people in Maycomb so, “[they] would not pass the Radley place at night, [they] would cut across to the sidewalk opposite and whistle as [they] walked” (11). The negroes barely felt comfortable walking alone during the day, let alone at night by the house with an alleged phantom. The African American citizens were fearful of what the white citizen might do to them. The white individuals lacked compassions towards the negroes and would not hesitate to harm one. This causes the black individuals to be fearful and cautious.When mixed raced children are raised in a racist community, they may experience fear and feeling of unworthiness, because ultimately, they don't belong anywhere. The mixed children in Maycomb “don’t belong anywhere. Coloured folks won’t have ‘em cause they’re half white, white folks won't have ‘em cause they’re coloured, so they’re just in betweens, don’t belong anywhere” (215). The observation represents the racism that resides in Maycomb. Although the child is only partially black and partially white, they are still deemed as unacceptable. ADD DISCUSSION. Citizens who are white have a much greater advantage in the courthouse because of their skin colour. In the Tom Robinson trial, the jury was made up of all white men and “in [Maycomb’s] courts, when it's a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins” (295). Although all of the evidence provided proved Tom’s innocence, he was still convicted. The jury may have been fearful that is they were to vote
