To kill a mockingbird was a book of innocence and racism. This book was in the ear of the great depression. This is a time where everyone lost their jobs, nobody had money and poverty rates shot up. In the book Lee explains the 4 kind of folk, the town folk, the Cunninghams, the Ewells and the Negroes. In her novel to kill mockingbird, she uses Arthur “Boo” Radley,Tom Robinson, and Atticus Finch as human mockingbirds.
Frist, Lee uses Arthur “Boo” Radley as a human mockingbird. Boo is a n old man who had been “locked away” by his dad for several years. Tom Robinson who was a innocent black man who went to trial on a 19 year old girl saying he “ raped” her. Lee writes “ Tom was twenty-five years of age; he was married with three children; he had been in trouble with the law once before” ( Leee 190) Tom was in a fight with another man when the man tried to cut him but Tom was put in jail because he could pay the fine while the other man did. Robinson was also crippled black man who basically lost his whole left hand. But because of his skin color and really how big he was he was trailed and found guilty of rapeing and sentenced to death for raping Mayella Ewell. She calmed she asked for a favor from Tom and when she let him into her home and raped and attacked her. Atticus drilled on the fact the Tom had only one hand and the fact that no doctor was called for Mayella to be checked out. The jury still sided with the Ewells and Tom was sentenced to death. While most of Maycomb believed that Tom was guilty Atticus and the Black community knew he wasn't and had hope he would beat the case. A few days later Atticus got news that Tom had been shot 17 times, he was accused of trying to run away during the exercise period. This shocked and saddened Tom's family and friends Along with the Finch family. Tom was simply killed because of the color of his Skin. He was a lawyer during the story which was the era of the Great Depression, He was the father to jem and scout and his wife had died a few years before. Scout say’s “ He did not do the things our schoolmates fathers did; he never went hunting, he did not play poker or fish or drink or smoke. He sat in the living room and read” (Lee 89). This quote is from scout as she's explaining Atticus and what he does because she not really realizing Atticus is too old to do those things. Atticus was an innocent man who was chose to defend a nigger during a time of pure racism and he went through a lot just because he wanted/ needed to help his man out Towards the end of the book after the trial is over Bob Ewell basically harassed Atticus For making him seem like a bad man in front of the whole town. Bob spits in Atticus face and all atticus does in wipe it off and go about his day as Bob couldn't phase Atticus he went to the next thing he could which was his kids. One night after the play when Jem and Scout were walking home they were attacked by Bob Ewell. Scout says “ He slowly squeezed the breath out of me. I could not move. Suddenly he was jerked backwards and flung on the ground, almost carrying me with him. I thought, Jem's up.” (Ch. 28).
